AdvocacyNCASL works to advance state and federal policies that advance high quality academic service-learning in K-12 schools. We believe service-learning is a critical element in effective school climate and providing high quality instruction for all students. As a result, our advocacy efforts focus on policies which address these components in solving our education system’s toughest issues: increasing student success, reducing the achievement gap, maximizing the capacity of all students as engaged learners, dropout prevention, balanced assessments, workforce development, and teacher quality.

NCASL has developed a concept paper related to the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This concept paper positions service-learning as a key strategy for increasing the effectiveness of our teachers and schools. It is our belief that increasing teachers’ capacity to use service-learning as a high quality instructional practice will have a direct impact on students academic, civic, and social-emotional outcomes.
